Communion
Two-Way Relationship
You've noticed God's presence. Now comes the transformation: learning to hear His voice. This is where everything changes.
"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." — John 10:27
The Core Truth
Most People Only Talk
Prayer is often one-way: we talk, we ask, we request. But real prayer is dialogue. You speak. He speaks. You listen. This is communion—not just communication.
The disciples learned to recognize Jesus' voice. They followed Him. They obeyed Him. Why? Because they could distinguish His voice from all the other noise. That same ability is yours. God speaks to His people. The question isn't whether He will—it's whether you can recognize when He does.
How God Speaks (Four Ways)
Scripture
A verse jumps out at you. A passage suddenly answers your question. The Spirit illuminates the written Word.
Impressions
A thought, image, or sense that feels like it's not from you. A persistent nudge toward something. A peace about a decision.
Circumstances
A door opens. A door closes. A conversation reveals what you needed to hear. God uses life to speak.
Others
Someone shares something that directly addresses what's in your heart. A prophetic word. Wise counsel. God speaks through His body.
Discernment: God's Voice vs. Your Voice
This is critical: not every thought is God. Not every impression is His. You must learn to distinguish.
God's Voice
- ✓ Brings peace
- ✓ Aligns with Scripture
- ✓ Calls you forward
- ✓ Builds others up
- ✓ Costs you something
- ✓ Feels humble, not proud
Your Voice (or Enemy's)
- ✗ Brings pressure/anxiety
- ✗ Contradicts Scripture
- ✗ Pulls you back
- ✗ Tears others down
- ✗ Makes you comfortable
- ✗ Feels grandiose/proud
Your Daily Practices
Weekly Challenges
Ask One Question Daily
Practice listening. Don't judge what comes. Just practice recognizing when He speaks.
Test Everything Against Scripture
For each impression, find Scripture that affirms or denies it. Build the muscle of discernment.
Notice the Peace
Pay attention to what brings peace vs. what brings pressure. Let that become your compass.
Act on One Small Word
Take one thing you sensed God saying and obey it. Small obedience trains you for bigger trust.
A Real Story
"I grew up thinking God didn't speak anymore—that was for Bible times. But in Communion, I started asking Him questions. The first week felt pointless. Then on day 6, I asked, 'How do you see me?' and the thought came so clearly: 'I see you as brave. Stop hiding.'
I tested it against Scripture—yes, God calls us to boldness. I checked for peace—there was peace under it, even though it called me to something I'm afraid of. So I started acting on it. I shared my testimony at church. I spoke up at work. And every single time, God showed up.
Now I listen like my life depends on it—because it does. His voice is not quiet. I was just never taught to listen."
— James, 31
