The Image You Were Made In
Genesis 1:26–28
Read the Scripture
Genesis 1:26–28Genesis 1:26-28
26God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.
28God blessed them. God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Key Verse
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." — Genesis 1:27
Today's Study
Before you had a name, you had a nature. Before you accomplished a single thing, you carried a dignity nothing in creation could claim.
Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness." Not after the animals, as an afterthought. As the summit. The whole creation account builds toward this one sentence.
And the first thing God does with that image is give it a vocation: Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish… the birds… every living creature. The image of God is not a passive portrait — it is a delegated authority. You were made to represent the One whose image you carry.
This is where your worth begins. Not in what you produce. Not in how you perform. Not in what others say about you. Your worth is rooted in the fact that the Creator of the universe stamped His own image on you.
The world will spend your whole life trying to tell you your value comes from somewhere else — your job, your body, your bank account, your followers, your achievements. All of those are shadows. The substance is this: you are an image-bearer of God.
You cannot earn what you already are. And nothing you do can erase it. The image is marred by the fall — but it is not destroyed. And the whole story of Scripture is God restoring what He made.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Where have you been measuring your worth by what you do rather than by whose image you carry?
- 2.What does it mean that your authority in creation flows from being made in God's image — not from your own strength?
- 3.If your worth is already settled before you do anything, what would you stop striving to prove today?
