30 Days with the Psalms
Begin each morning in the prayer book of the Bible — through praise, lament, wisdom, and trust.
The Two Paths
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. — Psalm 1:1–3
Reflection
Psalm 1 opens the entire Psalter with a portrait of two kinds of people — the one rooted in God's Word, and the one swept away by the wind. Notice that blessing does not come from avoiding sin alone, but from actively delighting in Scripture. This is not a picture of white-knuckled obedience. It is a picture of a person who loves God's Word so much that they meditate on it continuously — morning, noon, and night. The image of a tree planted by streams is not accidental. Trees don't chase water — they are placed near it and grow because of constant access to it. When you begin each morning in God's Word, you are positioning yourself near the stream. Whatever the day brings, you are nourished before it arrives.
Morning Prayer
Lord, make me a person who delights in Your Word — not just reads it, but loves it. Plant me near Your stream today. Let everything I do flow from what I receive from You this morning. Amen.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does it look like in your life to 'delight' in God's Word rather than just study it out of duty?
- 2.In what area of your life have you been standing in the way of sinners without realizing it?
- 3.How can you be more intentional about positioning yourself 'near the stream' each day?
