Biblical Use of Tongues

Core Principle

Private Prayer (Personal Use)
- •Individuals may pray quietly in tongues during worship or prayer
- •This is between them and God
- •No need to draw attention or interrupt
👉 Leader role: Allow it. No management needed unless it becomes distracting.
Public Expression (Group Setting)
When tongues are spoken out loud to the group:
- •It must be clear and intentional (not casual or ongoing)
- •It must be followed by interpretation (1 Cor. 14:27)
👉 Leader response:
Pause the room and say: "Let's wait for interpretation."
Interpretation
- •Let them share fully
- •Briefly weigh it:
- ◦ Does it align with Scripture?
- ◦ Does it build up the group?
👉 If yes: Receive it and continue
👉 If unsure: Hold it loosely and move forward
If No Interpretation Comes
- •Wait briefly (10–15 seconds)
- •Then continue the gathering naturally
👉 Follow up privately later with gentle teaching
Order & Limits
- •2–3 public messages at most
- •One at a time
- •No overlapping or shouting over others
👉 Leader role: "Let's take these one at a time."
Protect the Room
If something becomes:
- •Distracting
- •Repetitive
- •Attention-seeking
- •Disruptive
👉 Step in calmly:
"Let's keep this orderly so everyone can receive."
Keep the Focus Right
- •Tongues are not the goal
- •Jesus is the focus
- •Edification is the standard
👉 Always ask: "Is this building people up?"
Culture to Build
- •No pressure to speak in tongues
- •No elevation of those who do
- •No shutting down genuine expression
