Designed on Purpose.

Psalm 139, Jeremiah 1

Fingerprints don’t just show that we are different, they suggest that we were specifically meant to be known, individually- with the ability to leave a unique mark.

Looking down at the water glasses sitting scattered around the table, the thought came to me... each person there had unintentionally, without even thinking, left their mark on their glass, their own signature. A fingerprint.

Every single human being carries one, and no two have ever matched. Not even identical twins.

It’s deliberate uniqueness, tied to identity. It represents the entire essence of a unique person, saying this is me, and no one else can be this.

Fingerprints aren’t just random patterns, they’re identity markers. But how? From randomness?

If nature is seen by some as being purely unguided, how does it produce something that so perfectly mirrors the concept of identity? And how does it manage to get this process correct, every. single. time?

In Psalm 139, David writes that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” and that all our days were written before one of them came to be.

This paints a picture of a God who didn’t mass-produce humanity, but formed each life with detail, awareness, and purpose... each person as distinct, known, and identifiable.

Natural processes can potentially explain the mechanism by which fingerprints are developed, but not the management of this system. Not the guarantee of this continued unique characteristic, applied without fail (over billions and billions of people).

Think about it- your fingerprints are formed before you’re even born. Before you speak, before you choose, before you achieve anything, your identity is already marked into you physically. And is proven, simply and scientifically. They don't resemble function, they resemble meaning.

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” (Jeremiah 1) This doesn’t say He noticed you or discovered you. It boldly states, He knew you. He created you, therefore He KNOWS you. That word carries weight that implies relationship, even before existence as we understand it.

You are not one of many.

You are one of one.

Bible readers also know that we see similar comments echoed again when Jesus says in Matthew 10 that even the hairs on your head are all numbered. Think of that level of precision, of care so detailed that nothing about you escapes His awareness.

So when you step back and ponder something as simply profound as fingerprints, not just as a scientific phenomenon, but as a reflection of design, it starts to line up with a consistent biblical pattern:

You are not an accident.

You are not a duplicate.

You are not here by chance.

There is a level of intentionality woven into who you are that goes beyond what we can see or understand. Our identity, even down to the smallest detail, speaks to a God who creates with purpose, not randomness. Fingerprints don’t just show that we are different, they suggest we were specifically meant to be known, individually- with the ability to leave a unique mark.

But the point is, if He knows you that completely and individually, then your life isn’t something you have to force meaning into; it already has it.

The question isn’t whether you were designed with purpose, it’s whether you’ll step into the reality of who you actually were born to be.

History was predicted, just as it unfolded. The future is literally written in the same manner.

Your choice in how you 'uniquely' choose to respond, along with the reward or consequence is yours...

But also be aware... I wrote earlier, "each person there had unintentionally, without even thinking, left their mark on their glass, their own signature. A fingerprint..."

Isn't this true to life also? That regardless of our intent or intention, we so often leave our mark on others, without even realizing or thinking about it? So does this too not carry weight? Should we not also be more intentional, just as human beings, about this very thing also?

That choice is also yours.
