In Scripture, numbers sometimes whisper truth as loudly as sermons, and few numbers speak more consistently than 40.
40? Why 40?
It's actually hidden somewhat out of sight, yet still a significant number from a biblical perspective. From Genesis to Acts, this number appears again and again in moments of testing, preparation, purification, and transition. It's almost as if God stamped a rhythmic pattern into history to show His people how He works in seasons.
When you see 40 in the Bible, you will almost always find yourself standing inside a period of trial or formation. So much so that, if you're an avid connoisseur of Scripture, it may surprise you, if you've never noticed Over and over, 40 marks the space between calling and commissioning, between struggle and strength, between obedience and outcome.
The Flood- Genesis 7–8
Rain fell for 40 days and nights. After that period ended, the waters eventually receded and life was preserved through Noah. Deliverance followed the 40-day judgment period.
Moses on Mount Sinai- Exodus 24; 34
Moses fasted 40 days and nights before receiving the Law. Afterward came revelation, covenant instruction, and God’s glory passing before him.
Israel’s Wilderness Wandering- Numbers–Deuteronomy
Israel wandered 40 years because of unbelief. After that generation passed, the next generation entered the Promised Land under Joshua. The breakthrough came immediately after the 40-year testing.
Spies in Canaan- Numbers 13–14
The spies searched the land for 40 days. Their report triggered judgment for unbelief, but Joshua and Caleb later inherited the promise. Faithful endurance after the 40-day test led to reward.
Goliath’s Taunting- 1 Samuel 17
Goliath defied Israel for 40 days. Then David appeared and defeated him. Victory came right after the 40-day intimidation period.
Elijah’s Journey- 1 Kings 19
Elijah traveled 40 days to Horeb while exhausted and discouraged. At the end, God met him personally in a gentle whisper and recommissioned him. Restoration followed the 40-day journey.
Jesus’ Temptation- Matthew 4; Luke 4
Jesus fasted and was tempted for 40 days. Afterward, Satan left Him and angels ministered to Him. Then His public ministry began in power.
Jesus After Resurrection- Acts 1:3
Jesus appeared to the disciples for 40 days after rising. After that period came the ascension and then Pentecost- the outpouring of the Spirit and birth of the Church.
The number itself isn’t magical. The meaning comes from what God repeatedly does during those seasons. Forty is long enough to stretch faith, expose motives, and strip away self-reliance. It is long enough for pride to weaken and dependence on God to grow. In other words, 40 is God’s workshop, His time of making. It is where He prepares people privately before using them publicly.
One of the most encouraging truths is this: in Scripture, the season of 40 always ends. Not one biblical “40 season” lasts forever. The rain stops. The wilderness years conclude. The fast ends. The trial breaks. And what follows is never random, it is purpose. Breakthrough. Direction. Power. Promise fulfilled. God does not bring His people into a 40-season to abandon them there. He brings them through it to transform them there.
If you're going through something similar, remember to stay focused and faithful. Day 41 is coming. The biblical testimony of 40 reminds us that waiting is not wasting. Testing is not rejection. Silence is not absence. Often, those are the very conditions where God is doing His deepest work. In God’s hands, the wilderness is never the destination, it's the doorway.
