I stood over the casket of a lost friend who died unexpectedly. I'm sure, like most, he was no doubt planning on many years ahead of him still. It didn't happen as planned.
I listened as people said this simple phrase over top of him so casually, time and again... “Rest in peace." Such irony: rest and peace. Certainly we would wish that, but for my friend, I'm afraid for all of eternity, neither of these simple graces will now be the case.
These three simple words... Spoken at funerals, typed in social media comments, engraved into stone, whispered through tears beside hospital beds, and when standing over caskets. It’s as if it might instill some level of hope that the person who has passed away might finally find real peace, on the other side of life. But there is a sacred truth that we rarely wish to confront: Death may not create peace; it may create eternal regret and torment for some. You either will or you will not, based on the decisions you make now. There's no maybe and no inbetween.
A heartbeat stopping does not automatically reconcile a soul to God, no more than a funeral can erase sin. And a grave does not suddenly produce salvation.
In fact, the process of dying does only one of two guaranteed things (1.) it lands you in a place of eternal joy, love, and peace, or (2.) the very opposite, eternally. E.t.e.r.n.a.l.l.y.
Let’s not mince words, if this doesn’t shake you literally to your core, there’s something tremendously broken and scarily in denial inside of you. There isn’t multiple options... believing in Jesus and knowing Jesus is two different things. Even the demons believe in Jesus. Being a good person doesn’t do it either. There is a standard, and only one.
The soul can only truly rest in peace one way: through Jesus Christ.
Period. No other way. Period. Whether you agree or you don’t, opinion doesn’t trump truth. And those who have invested the time to discover the truth, actually know this, uncomfortable or not. And they know how fragile life is, and are intelligent enough not to gamble such a thing.
We live in a culture that wants Heaven without surrender, cherished eternity without repentance, salvation without Jesus, and peace without holiness. We want to believe that everyone automatically enters rest simply because they have died. But Scripture says something entirely different. The Bible teaches that humanity’s greatest problem is not physical death. It is separation from God.
Romans 3:23 says: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Every person.
Every life.
Every heart.
Sin is not merely “mistakes.” Sin is rebellion against the God who created us. It is the reason humanity feels empty while surrounded by possessions. It is why anxiety persists even in success. It is why guilt lingers. Why shame torments. Why hearts remain restless.
We were created for communion with God, but sin separated us from Him.
Isaiah 59:2 confirms exactly this: “Your iniquities have separated you from your God.” That separation is the deepest wound humanity carries.
And no amount of money can heal it.
No relationship can cure it.
No success can silence it.
No religion can erase it.
Only Jesus. This is why Christ even bothered to join us here on earth...
Not to start a religion or create spiritual rituals.
Not merely to make bad people nicer.
Jesus came to rescue humanity from eternal separation from God. John 3:16 declares boldly: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Read that carefully. Then again. God’s motivation was love. He sooo loved us!
The cross was not God reluctantly tolerating humanity. The cross was God stepping into humanity’s punishment Himself so we could be forgiven.
Jesus took the penalty sin deserved. So that sinners could become sons and daughters. That is the Gospel. And this is why peace is only found in Him.
Heaven is real. Hell is real.
And every human soul will stand before God. Every knee bow at His majesty.
“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” - Hebrews 9:27
The greatest deception in modern culture is convincing people they have endless time to figure things out spiritually. But life is fragile. Every obituary proves it. Every funeral proves it. Every cemetery proves it. And the terrifying reality is that many people spend their entire lives running from the only One who can save them.
Right now, there are people reading this carrying hidden shame, hidden addiction, hidden fear, hidden emptiness, hidden exhaustion. You have tried to fill the void with relationships, money, pleasure, distraction, achievement, substances, or religion itself… and yet the emptiness remains.
That is why even successful people still feel empty. Why celebrities overdose. Why wealthy people still battle depression. Why people surrounded by entertainment still feel alone.
The soul is starving for the presence of God. “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” -Matthew 11:28
Rest. Real rest. Soul rest.
Peace.
Forgiveness.
Freedom.
Reconciliation.
Not because you earned it, but because He loves you. Jesus did not die so you could remain condemned. He died so you could become family.
And today, you have a choice.
You can continue running from God. Continue delaying. Continue assuming there will always be more time.
Or you can surrender. Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Saved from sin.
Saved from judgment.
Saved from separation.
Saved into eternal life.
This is the truth behind the phrase “rest in peace.” A soul only truly rests when it belongs to Christ.
So do not wait until your funeral for someone to speak peace over your life, that will never come. This IS your chance... come to Jesus now, while your heart is beating, while mercy is still being extended, while grace is still calling your name.
The question is whether you will know Him as Savior now… or stand before Him later having rejected the only One who could have saved you.
Christ is calling. Come home to God.
There is peace there.
There is mercy there.
There is eternal life there.
