Absolutely, God is all-powerful, but Scripture is also very clear that there are things God cannot do, not because He lacks power, but because of who He is.
Don't believe me? Here are the main ones, straight from the Bible...
God cannot lie.
“God is not a man, that He should lie…” — Numbers 23:19
“…it is impossible for God to lie.” — Hebrews 6:18
Lying would contradict God’s nature. Truth isn’t something He practices, it’s something He is.
God cannot sin.
“God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone.” — James 1:13
Sin requires moral defect. God has none. He doesn’t avoid sin by effort; sin has no foothold on Him.
God cannot deny Himself.
“If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” — 2 Timothy 2:13
God cannot contradict His own character. He will never act outside His holiness, justice, or faithfulness.
God cannot break His promises.
“The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise…” — 2 Peter 3:9
Every promise God makes is bound to His character. If God broke a promise, He would cease to be God, so He won’t.
God cannot approve of evil.
“Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; You cannot tolerate wrongdoing.” — Habakkuk 1:13
This is key to understanding justice, judgment, and yes—hell. God doesn’t overlook evil; He deals with it.
God cannot change.
“I the Lord do not change.” — Malachi 3:6
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8
God doesn’t evolve, improve, or adapt. Change implies deficiency. God has none.
God cannot force genuine love.
“Choose this day whom you will serve.” — Joshua 24:15
Love that is coerced isn’t love. God offers relationship, not robotic obedience. Choice is essential, even when it’s costly.
God’s “can’t” statements don’t limit Him by any means, but rather they define Him. These aren't restrictions, they are contradictions... which is impossible for Him.
He can’t lie because He’s truth.
He can’t sin because He’s holy.
He can’t deny Himself because He’s faithful.
And this is why biblical justice, mercy, grace, and even judgment all exist together without contradiction. He created all things, thus defining all things. God is perfection, and sets the unattainable standard as to what this means. But the real biblical truth is, there are things that even God cannot do, and those things are meant to deliver grace and blessings to those who believe.
