The Persecuted Church Today

Powerful testimonies from believers around the world who face imprisonment, torture, and death for following Jesus. Their stories will challenge your faith and ignite your prayers.

"If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it."

— 1 Corinthians 12:26

Right now, while you read this, a pastor is in a prison cell. A mother is deciding whether to let her children go to a secret Bible study. A young man is choosing whether to publicly confess Christ — knowing it may cost him his life. This is the reality of following Jesus for hundreds of millions of our brothers and sisters.

We in the Western church have the extraordinary gift of religious freedom. This page exists to make sure we never take it for granted — and to stand with those who don't have it.

Richard Wurmbrand

Romania

"I was in prison for my faith, but my faith was never in prison."

Tortured for 14 years in Romanian communist prisons, Pastor Richard Wurmbrand refused to name other believers. He was hung upside down, burned with cigarettes, and subjected to psychological torment. When he was ransomed to the West, he smuggled testimony of what was happening behind the Iron Curtain — and founded Voice of the Martyrs, still serving the persecuted church today.

Brother Yun ('The Heavenly Man')

China

"They tried to crush the church. Instead, they scattered seeds."

Imprisoned multiple times for evangelism, Brother Yun fasted for 74 days while in prison — refusing to eat or drink, declaring God was his sustenance. His captors were confounded. During one imprisonment, he walked out of a maximum security facility undetected in what believers describe as a miraculous escape — described in vivid detail in his memoir, 'The Heavenly Man.'

Mariam Ibrahim

Sudan

"I am a Christian and I will remain a Christian."

In 2014, Mariam Ibrahim was sentenced to death in Sudan for 'apostasy' — she was born to a Muslim father but raised as a Christian. She gave birth to her daughter in chains in prison. Despite enormous international pressure, she refused to renounce her faith. She was ultimately released due to global outcry and resettled in the United States — but her first words in court remain iconic.

Pastor Wang Yi

China

"The path of the cross is the path of life."

Pastor Wang Yi of Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu saw the crackdown coming. In 2018, he penned his 'Declaration of Faithful Disobedience' before his arrest — a document smuggled out of China that declared his unwillingness to submit his church to state control. He was arrested in December 2018 and sentenced to 9 years. His congregation was scattered. And yet Early Rain continues to meet.

God Is Moving — Miraculously

This is not just a page about suffering. It is a page about the unstoppable power of God. Where the enemy has pressed hardest, the Spirit has moved most powerfully. The following is not theory — it is documented history happening right now.

Documented Revival

Iran: The Church That Cannot Be Killed

1M+ secret believers and growing 20% annually

After the 1979 revolution, the Islamic Republic tried to eliminate Christianity. They made conversion illegal, executed pastors, and shuttered churches. What happened instead is now called 'the greatest move of God since Pentecost.' Millions of Iranians — many through dreams and visions of Jesus — have secretly come to faith.

Documented Revival

China: From 4 Million to 100 Million

Estimated 80–100 million believers today

In 1949, when all missionaries were expelled, there were 4 million Christians in China. After 75 years of communism, oppression, and Cultural Revolution — there are between 80–100 million. The underground house church movement is now one of the largest missionary-sending movements in the world.

Documented Revival

Algeria: North Africa's Quiet Revival

Church growing at 40%+ in a decade

Algeria, a historically Muslim nation, has seen one of the most unexpected church growth movements in history — with tens of thousands of Berber (Kabyle) people coming to faith. Churches are registered illegally, leaders are threatened, but the movement continues to grow.

Documented Revival

Ethiopia: Singing Through Persecution

Ethiopia is home to one of the largest evangelical movements in Africa

Despite attacks from Al-Shabaab in the east and government instability, the Ethiopian evangelical church has exploded in growth. Ethiopian believers are known for their all-night prayer vigils and bold evangelism into restricted Muslim-majority regions.

"The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church." — Tertullian (c. 200 AD)

He wrote that 1,800 years ago. It has been proven true in every generation since. The kingdoms and ideologies that have tried to destroy the church have themselves been destroyed — while the church remains. This is not history. This is today.

How to Stand With Them

Pray By Name

Don't just pray abstractly. Open Doors, VOM, and ICC all have specific prayer requests for specific believers by name and country. Pray for them as you would a family member.

Give to the Work

A small gift goes far in places where economies are crushed. Open Doors, VOM, and Barnabas Aid use donations for Bibles, emergency relief, legal aid, and pastor training.

Refuse to Forget

Share these stories. Read this page with your house church. Watch the documentaries together. Their courage will change how you think about your own walk with Christ.

Statistics sourced from Open Doors World Watch List 2026. Testimonies drawn from publicly documented accounts via Voice of the Martyrs, Open Doors, ICC, and published memoirs. We hold these stories with reverence. The names of currently active underground believers have been protected.
