The Shroud of Turin
A 14-foot linen cloth bearing the full-body image of a crucified man. The most studied artifact in human history. Its image formation mechanism remains scientifically unexplained.
"The Shroud is the single most studied artifact in human history, and no one has been able to explain how the image was formed."
— Dr. Barrie Schwortz, STURP lead documenting photographer (Jewish, former skeptic)
The Positive & Negative Image
Discovered by Photography in 1898
When amateur photographer Secondo Pia photographed the Shroud in 1898, he was stunned to discover that the photographic negative revealed a far clearer, more lifelike image than the positive — the opposite of any painting or normal photograph. The Shroud's image itself is a negative. This means the image contains information that was invisible to the naked eye for over a millennium. No medieval forger could have created a negative image — photographic negatives were not invented until 1839.
3D Spatial Encoding
Not a Photograph. Not a Painting.
In 1976, scientists John Jackson and Eric Jumper fed the Shroud image into a VP-8 Image Analyzer (NASA technology used for space photography). The analyzer converts image intensity into topographical height. Photographs produce distorted 3D maps. Paintings produce chaotic noise. The Shroud produced a perfect, anatomically accurate 3D relief of a human body — meaning the image encodes spatial distance information that no two-dimensional artwork contains. This property has never been replicated by any forger or scientist.
Wound-by-Wound: Shroud vs. Gospel Passion Accounts
The Shroud bears physical marks that correspond with remarkable precision to the specific wounds described in the Gospel Passion narratives — including several details that were anatomically unknown or artistically unconventional in the medieval period.
Scientific Studies & Peer-Reviewed Research
The Shroud is the most scientifically tested artifact in history. The following studies represent the major investigations — including the famous 1988 C-14 test and the subsequent peer-reviewed challenges to its methodology.
The 1988 C-14 Test: What the Headlines Missed
The media widely reported the 1988 result as "Shroud proven medieval — case closed." What was not reported: (1) the STURP protocol required multiple samples from different locations — this was ignored; (2) the sample came from the single most contaminated corner, which textile experts and the STURP chemist Raymond Rogers later confirmed had been rewoven; (3) Rogers' peer-reviewed 2005 paper in Thermochimica Acta presented vanillin evidence that the sample did not represent the main cloth; (4) three independent dating methods conducted since 2005 have returned dates consistent with the 1st century. The debate is not over. It was never over.
Conclusions — As Presented by Dr. Jeremiah Johnston
Dr. Jeremiah Johnston — Christian apologist, author, and president of the Christian Thinkers Society — addresses the Shroud extensively in his apologetics work, particularly in "Unanswered: Lasting Truth for Trending Questions" and his "Unimaginable" series. Johnston approaches the Shroud not as a theologian seeking confirmation, but as an evidentialist applying rigorous historical and forensic standards.

The Shroud as Primary Exhibit, Not Proof
Johnston emphasizes that the Shroud is not the basis of Christian faith — the resurrection is. However, the Shroud functions as a powerful exhibit of corroborating evidence. A defense attorney does not rest a case on a single exhibit, but strong physical evidence that corroborates eyewitness testimony strengthens the overall case. The Shroud corroborates the Passion narratives in ways that would be virtually impossible for a medieval forger to achieve.
The Image Formation Problem is a Genuine Scientific Anomaly
Johnston notes that 40+ years after STURP's investigation, no scientist — secular or Christian — has produced a satisfactory natural explanation for how the image was formed. The image has 3D spatial information, is a negative (visible only when photographically reversed — discovered in 1898 by amateur photographer Secondo Pia), and penetrates only the topmost fibers of the cloth without pigment, dye, or any chemical agent detectable by modern spectroscopy.
The 1988 C-14 Test Was Methodologically Compromised
Johnston cites Rogers' Thermochimica Acta paper and Fanti's subsequent work as serious peer-reviewed challenges to the 1988 result. The sample was taken from a single corner — the most handled, most contaminated, and most likely repaired portion of the cloth. The STURP protocol originally called for multiple samples from different locations, which was overridden for political reasons. This is not credible scientific methodology.
The Anatomical Accuracy Points to Authentic Crucifixion
Johnston highlights the wrist nail wound as particularly significant. Medieval artists, without exception, painted crucifixion wounds through the palms — because that is what tradition depicted and what seemed intuitively correct. But a nail through the palm cannot support a body's weight; it tears through. Modern anatomical research confirms nails were driven through the wrists (at the space of Destot). The Shroud depicts this correctly. A medieval forger working from artistic convention would have depicted palms.
Convergence of Evidence
Johnston's approach, consistent with his "Unimaginable" series, is cumulative. No single piece of evidence proves the Shroud's authenticity. But the convergence of: forensically real blood of type AB, pollen from Jerusalem flora, anatomically accurate wounds consistent with Roman crucifixion, an inexplicable image formation mechanism, 3D spatial encoding, and the 1988 C-14 test' s disputed methodology — together creates a case that is very difficult to dismiss. The weight of evidence, Johnston argues, points toward authenticity.
The Honest Verdict
Johnston does not claim the Shroud is definitively authenticated — he acknowledges the ongoing scientific debate. What he argues is that the evidence makes dismissal intellectually dishonest. The Shroud has not been debunked. The 1988 test — the only widely publicized "disproof" — has been seriously challenged in peer-reviewed literature. The image remains scientifically inexplicable. And its physical characteristics correspond precisely to the Gospel account of Jesus's burial. That convergence warrants serious consideration.
"After 40 years and millions of dollars of scientific investigation, we still cannot explain how the image was formed."
— Dr. Barrie Schwortz, STURP, in multiple post-investigation interviews
The image on the Shroud is not painted. It is not a photograph. It contains no pigment, no dye, no chemical agent detectable by modern spectroscopy. It encodes 3D spatial information. It is a negative. The blood is real human blood. The wounds match the Gospel accounts with forensic precision. And no scientist — secular or Christian — has produced a reproducible natural explanation for how it exists. That is not a statement of faith. That is the current state of the scientific record.
